Why I Booked a Last-Minute Sailing on Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas
There is something undeniably thrilling about a trip you did not overthink.. This time, that trip is Wonder of the Seas.

While I love a beautifully planned itinerary as much as anyone, I also think there is something to be said for saying yes to a getaway simply because it sounds fun, the timing works, you’ve got the cash, and your heart needs something to look forward to. That is how this cruise came to be. It was not booked a year in advance with color-coded spreadsheets. It was a little more spontaneous than that—and honestly that’s part of the magic.
There is a certain freedom in booking last minute. You skip some of the endless second-guessing and go straight to the good part: imagining yourself on board, drink in hand, wake in view, phone on airplane mode. Sometimes the best trips are the ones that arrive not a moment too soon. That’s not to say that last minute bookings don’t have their downsides: the excursion my heart was set on is full.
I will be sailing on Wonder of the Seas this May and I am already looking forward to that shift that happens the minute you step on board and real life starts to fade into the background as the shoreline does. One minute you are answering emails and folding laundry, and the next you are watching the water stretch endlessly around you, wondering why you do not live here.
Part of what makes this sailing especially fun is that Wonder of the Seas will be the largest ship we have sailed on to date. She is not small, sleepy, or subtle. She is a destination in her own right—big, lively, and full of things to explore. There is something exciting about pairing that kind of larger-than-life ship with a last-minute decision.
I also love that a cruise like this can hold so many versions of a vacation at once. It can be poolside and peaceful, adventurous and indulgent, easygoing and exciting. You can chase the energy or ignore it completely. You can fill your days or leave them gloriously open. That flexibility is part of what keeps me coming back to cruising again and again: the space to make the experience your own.

So this is your reminder that every trip does not have to be booked months and years ahead to be worth taking. Not every escape has to be perfectly timed or perfectly planned. Sometimes a little spontaneity is exactly what the doctor ordered. Sometimes it’s best to just thank the universe for the last balcony room available for half price on a deck without lifeboats blocking your view or serious nap-killing potential sounds or smells.
I will be sharing more about this sailing soon—from what I’m packing (and not packing) and what I’ve booked to what I am most excited to see, do, and eat on board. But for now, I am leaning into the joy of having something wonderful on the horizon…even if it’s coming together at the last minute.
Every now and then, the loveliest journeys are the ones that arrive with very little notice and impeccable timing.
